Managing Guest Access for Smart Home Devices

Secure your smart home by configuring guest permissions for locks, cameras, and lights using native platform settings for Apple Home and Google Home.

  1. Invite guests via Apple Home. Open the Home app and tap the More button represented by three dots in the top right corner. Select Home Settings, then tap Invite People. Enter the guest's Apple ID or phone number and tap Send Invite to transmit the request.
  2. Define remote access permissions. Within the same Home Settings menu, tap on the invited user's profile card. Toggle Allow Remote Access to control if the guest can operate devices while away from the home network. Toggle Add and Edit Accessories to restrict whether the guest can modify your device configurations.
  3. Set up Google Home guest members. Open the Google Home app and tap the Settings icon. Select Household, tap the Plus icon, then choose Invite home member. Enter the guest's email address and tap Next to review their permissions before sending the invite.
  4. Manage door lock access codes. If using a smart lock, open the manufacturer's dedicated app rather than the Home aggregator. Navigate to Access Codes or Guest Access and create a unique PIN code for the visitor. Assign a schedule if the lock supports time-bound entry to ensure the code expires automatically after their departure.
  5. Verify guest visibility and removal. Periodically audit your guest list by revisiting the Home Settings or Household menu in your respective apps. Identify unused profiles and tap Remove Member to instantly revoke access to all connected devices. This cleanup should be performed immediately after the guest vacates the property.
