How to Automate Smart Plugs for Safe Daily Operation

Learn how to safely automate your smart plugs using schedules and proximity triggers to improve energy efficiency and device longevity.

1. Configure your smart plug in the native app. Plug your device into a grounded wall outlet and open the manufacturer's companion application. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the device to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and perform any mandatory firmware updates to ensure security patches are applied.
2. Establish power-off timers for fire safety. Navigate to the Automations or Schedule tab in the app. Create a routine that automatically shuts off the plug at a set time, such as 11:00 PM, to prevent heat-producing devices from remaining energized overnight.
3. Implement proximity or geofencing triggers. Select the Automations tab and create a new trigger based on location. Set the plug to toggle off when the last person leaves the home's geofenced perimeter, ensuring devices are not left running while the house is empty.
4. Set power usage notifications. Navigate to the device settings and enable energy monitoring alerts. Set a threshold to receive a push notification if the connected device draws power unexpectedly during hours it should be inactive.
5. Link your master scene. Group your smart plug into a Master Scene, such as Leaving Home or Goodnight. By toggling the scene, all linked plugs will execute their programmed states simultaneously, allowing for a single-point control mechanism.
