How to Set Up a Smart Thermostat
Learn to install and configure your smart thermostat in 8 steps. Wire connections, WiFi setup, and smartphone app configuration included.
- Turn off power at the circuit breaker. Locate your HVAC system's circuit breaker in your electrical panel and switch it to the OFF position. Test that power is off by attempting to adjust your current thermostat. The display should be completely dark.
- Remove the old thermostat. Unscrew the thermostat from the wall and gently pull it away from the mounting plate. Take a clear photo of the wire connections before disconnecting them. Label each wire with the terminal letter it was connected to (R, W, Y, G, C).
- Install the new mounting plate. Hold the smart thermostat's mounting plate against the wall, ensuring it's level. Mark screw holes with a pencil and drill pilot holes if mounting into drywall. Secure the plate with the provided screws, threading the wires through the center opening.
- Connect the wires to the smart thermostat. Match each labeled wire to the corresponding terminal on the smart thermostat: R (power), W (heat), Y (cool), G (fan), and C (common). Push wires firmly into terminals until they click or tighten screws securely. Ensure no bare wire is exposed.
- Attach the thermostat to the mounting plate. Align the smart thermostat with the mounting plate and press firmly until it clicks into place. Some models require you to slide the unit onto the plate from the bottom. The display should fit flush against the wall.
- Restore power and complete initial setup. Return to your circuit breaker and switch the HVAC power back to ON. The thermostat display should illuminate and begin the setup wizard. Follow on-screen prompts to select your system type, heating and cooling preferences, and time zone.
- Connect to your WiFi network. Navigate to Network or WiFi settings on the thermostat display. Select your home network from the list and enter your WiFi password using the on-screen keyboard. Wait for the connection confirmation message before proceeding.
- Download and configure the smartphone app. Install the manufacturer's app from the App Store or Google Play Store. Create an account and follow prompts to add your thermostat using the device's QR code or serial number. Configure schedules, temperature preferences, and any smart home integrations.
