How to set up Nest cameras

A direct guide to configuring your Nest camera. Learn how to pair, mount, and integrate your device into the Google Home ecosystem effectively.

  1. Charge the camera and scan the QR code. Plug your Nest camera into a power source using the provided USB-C cable until the status light pulses white. Locate the QR code on the back or base of the device. This code contains the unique pairing credentials required for initial identification.
  2. Initialize setup in the Google Home app. Open the Google Home app and ensure you are logged into your primary Google account. Tap the Plus (+) icon in the top-left corner, select Set up device, and choose New device. Select your home from the list to begin the scanning process.
  3. Pair the camera to your Wi-Fi network. When prompted, point your phone camera at the QR code on your Nest device. The app will initiate a handshake; follow the on-screen prompts to select your local Wi-Fi network and enter the password. Once connected, the camera will finalize its firmware update.
  4. Assign a room and name. Select a room name from the list provided or create a custom room name for your device. Input a descriptive name for the camera, such as Front Porch or Living Room, to assist with Google Assistant voice commands.
  5. Configure motion and activity zones. Navigate to the camera settings within the Google Home app. Select Events, then Activity Zones to draw specific regions for motion detection. This reduces false alerts by ignoring high-traffic areas like public streets or swaying trees.
