How to Configure Guest Access in a Smart Home

Secure your smart home by setting up restricted guest access. Learn to manage permissions and temporary controls for visitors without compromising your network.

  1. Create a guest-specific user profile. Open your primary smart home management application. Navigate to Settings, select Home Members or People, and tap the Add Member or Invite Guest icon. Input the guest's email address associated with their account on the respective platform.
  2. Define device access limitations. Review the list of available smart devices in your home. Toggle off administrative permissions for the guest profile to prevent them from modifying device names, automation triggers, or network security settings. Grant access only to the devices necessary for their stay, such as living room lights and climate control.
  3. Enable temporary network isolation. Access your router's administration interface or dedicated Wi-Fi app. Navigate to Guest Network settings and enable a separate SSID for visitors. This isolates guest devices from your primary network and sensitive hardware like NAS drives or connected printers.
  4. Set time-bound access constraints. If your hub supports scheduled access, navigate to the specific guest profile settings. Define the start and end dates for their access permissions. If the ecosystem lacks native scheduling, set a reminder to manually revoke access upon the guest's departure.
  5. Test device interaction permissions. Log into the guest account on a secondary device or ask the guest to open their application. Confirm they can only control the devices you authorized and cannot access your automation history or global settings. Verify that they are connected to the guest Wi-Fi segment rather than the primary network.
  6. Remove guest credentials post-stay. Once the visitor departs, return to the Home Members or People menu in your app. Select the guest's profile and tap Remove Member or Revoke Access. Confirm the removal to instantly terminate all smart home control capabilities for that user.
