How to Set Up Amazon Echo from Scratch

Complete guide to setting up your new Amazon Echo device. Download the Alexa app, connect to Wi-Fi, and configure your smart speaker in minutes.

  1. Download and install the Amazon Alexa app. Install the Amazon Alexa app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android). Sign in with your Amazon account credentials. If you don't have an Amazon account, tap 'Create a new Amazon account' and follow the prompts.
  2. Plug in your Echo device. Connect the power adapter to your Echo and plug it into a wall outlet. The light ring will turn blue, then orange. Wait for the light ring to turn orange and Alexa to say 'Hello, your device is ready for setup.'
  3. Add your device in the Alexa app. Open the Alexa app and tap the Devices icon in the bottom right. Tap the plus icon (+) in the top right corner, then select 'Add Device.' Choose 'Amazon Echo' from the device list and select your specific Echo model.
  4. Connect Echo to Wi-Fi. The app will search for your Echo device automatically. When it appears, tap 'Connect to Wi-Fi.' Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter your network password. The Echo's light ring will turn blue, then orange, then blue again as it connects.
  5. Choose your device location. Select which room your Echo is located in from the dropdown menu, or create a custom room name. This helps organize multiple devices and enables room-specific commands. Tap 'Continue' to proceed.
  6. Test Alexa and configure settings. Say 'Alexa, what time is it?' to test the wake word detection. The app will guide you through optional setup steps like connecting music services, enabling skills, and setting up smart home devices. Complete these based on your preferences.
  7. Complete the setup process. Review your settings in the app and tap 'Setup Complete.' Your Echo is now ready to use. The light ring should be off when idle, indicating successful setup and connection to your Wi-Fi network.
