How to Install and Configure a Smart Thermostat

A precise guide to installing a smart thermostat, configuring wiring, and connecting your home climate system to your network.

  1. Disable power to the HVAC system. Locate your home circuit breaker panel and switch off the breaker controlling your furnace and air conditioning unit. Verify the power is off by attempting to adjust the temperature on your current thermostat; if the display remains off and the system does not engage, proceed.
  2. Photograph existing wiring. Remove the faceplate of the existing thermostat to expose the wiring terminals. Before disconnecting any wires, take a clear, high-resolution photograph of the wire colors and their corresponding terminal labels for reference.
  3. Mount the smart thermostat base. Disconnect the wires from the old base plate and remove the unit from the wall. Align the new smart thermostat backplate, ensuring it is level, and secure it to the wall using the provided mounting screws and anchors.
  4. Connect terminal wires. Insert each wire into the corresponding terminal on the new backplate. Ensure each wire clicks into place or is secured by the terminal lever, confirming there is no exposed copper outside of the connector.
  5. Attach display and restore power. Snap the thermostat display unit onto the mounted base plate. Return to your circuit breaker panel and switch the HVAC power back to the ON position.
  6. Sync with the mobile application. Download the manufacturer's dedicated application on your smartphone. Follow the in-app instructions to scan the device QR code, connect to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network, and complete the hardware calibration.
