How to Configure a Smart Display as a Home Control Panel

Transform your smart display into a dedicated home control hub. Follow these steps to optimize your interface for lighting, climate, and security management.

  1. Assign the display to a room. Open the Google Home app on your mobile device. Navigate to Settings, select Devices, and assign your smart display to the specific room where it is physically located to enable location-aware control.
  2. Enable Home Control features. On the smart display, swipe down from the top edge of the screen to access the Dashboard. Tap the Home Control icon to verify that your connected devices, such as lights, locks, and thermostats, appear in the local interface.
  3. Customize the device dashboard. In the Google Home app, tap the Favorites tab. Select Add, then Devices, and choose the most frequently used smart home devices to pin them directly to the main dashboard of your smart display for faster access.
  4. Adjust screen timeout settings. Navigate to the display settings menu by swiping up from the bottom and selecting the gear icon. Select Display, then Screen Timeout, and set the display to remain on during active hours to ensure the control panel is always ready for input.
  5. Validate sensor responsiveness. Test the interface by toggling a smart light or adjusting the thermostat temperature directly from the screen. Confirm that the status updates accurately across the Google Home app and the physical hardware.
