How to Factory Reset a Matter Device
Learn the correct procedure to factory reset your Matter-enabled smart home device and remove it from your network controllers securely.
- Remove the device from your smart home ecosystem. Open the primary controller app, such as Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. Locate the device settings, select 'Remove Accessory' or 'Delete Device,' and confirm the removal to ensure the controller stops attempting to communicate with the hardware.
- Identify the physical reset method. Inspect the device for a physical reset button or a specific power-cycle sequence. Most Matter devices feature a recessed pinhole button or require a specific pattern of flipping the physical power switch or unplugging the device.
- Perform the physical reset sequence. Press and hold the reset button for 10 to 15 seconds until the status indicator light flashes or changes color. If using a power-cycle method, toggle the power off and on at specific intervals as defined by the manufacturer hardware specifications.
- Confirm the device is in pairing mode. Observe the LED status indicator on the device. Once the reset sequence is complete, the indicator should pulse or blink steadily, indicating it is broadcasting its Matter commissionable identity.
- Add the device back to your network. Open your preferred smart home app and select 'Add Accessory.' Scan the Matter QR code or manually enter the numeric setup code located on the device or its original packaging to re-establish the connection.
