How to Install a Smart Light Switch
A precise, step-by-step guide to installing a smart light switch. Ensure safety, verify wiring, and configure your smart home connection in minutes.
- Disable power at the circuit breaker. Locate your electrical service panel and flip the circuit breaker corresponding to the light switch room. Use a non-contact voltage tester on the switch plate to verify that the power is completely off before proceeding.
- Remove the existing switch. Unscrew the wall plate and the switch mounting screws. Pull the switch gently out of the junction box until the wires are accessible, keeping them attached to the terminals for now.
- Verify required wiring. Inspect the box for a neutral wire bundle, usually white, often tucked into the back. Most smart switches require a neutral connection to power the radio chip; if you lack a neutral wire, you must use a 'no-neutral' compatible smart switch.
- Connect the smart switch wires. Disconnect the wires from the old switch and secure them to the corresponding terminals on the new smart switch. Connect the green or copper wire to ground, the white wire to neutral, and the black load/line wires to the switch terminals.
- Secure the switch and restore power. Tuck the wires neatly into the junction box and screw the switch into the mounting bracket. Reattach the wall plate, return to the breaker panel, and switch the power back on.
- Pair with your smart home network. Open the manufacturer app on your smartphone and select 'Add Device'. Follow the prompts to scan the QR code on the switch and connect it to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network or Thread border router.
