How to Install a Google Nest Thermostat

A precise, step-by-step guide to installing your Google Nest Thermostat. Ensure proper wiring and configuration for optimal smart home climate control.

  1. Power off the HVAC system. Locate your home circuit breaker panel. Switch off the power to your heating and cooling system to prevent electrical shorting during installation.
  2. Remove the existing faceplate. Pull the cover off your current thermostat. Use your phone to take a clear photograph of the existing wire configuration for reference.
  3. Disconnect and secure wires. Press the release tabs on the wiring terminals to remove the wires one by one. Gently push the wires back through the wall plate so they do not fall behind the wall.
  4. Mount the Nest baseplate. Align the Nest baseplate against the wall. Use the integrated bubble level to ensure it is horizontal before driving the included screws into the wall anchors.
  5. Insert wires into the terminals. Insert each wire into the corresponding terminal on the Nest base. Push the wire firmly until the terminal button stays depressed, indicating a secure connection.
  6. Attach the display and power on. Press the Nest display onto the base until it clicks into place. Return to the breaker panel and switch the power to the HVAC system back on.
  7. Configure via Google Home app. Open the Google Home app on your smartphone and select Add Device. Follow the on-screen instructions to scan the QR code on the thermostat and complete the network setup.
