How to Add a Matter Device to Your Smart Home
A precise guide to connecting Matter-enabled smart devices to your preferred ecosystem using pairing codes or QR codes.
- Confirm network requirements. Ensure your smartphone is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. If using a Thread-based device, verify your Border Router, such as a HomePod or Apple TV, is powered on and updated to the latest firmware.
- Power on the device. Plug in your Matter device or install the required batteries. Wait for the status indicator light to blink, indicating the device is in pairing mode and ready to broadcast its temporary network.
- Open your controller app. Launch your primary smart home application, such as Apple Home, Google Home, or Amazon Alexa. Locate the Add Accessory or Plus (+) icon in the top right corner of the dashboard.
- Scan the Matter code. Select Scan QR Code or Add Matter Accessory. Use your smartphone camera to scan the unique Matter QR code found on the device chassis or the physical packaging.
- Assign device metadata. Follow the on-screen prompts to name your device and assign it to a specific room within your home. This ensures consistent voice control across all integrated assistants.
- Test device connectivity. Toggle the device status from within the application to confirm a successful handshake. Once operational, the device status will update in real-time across all other Matter-linked controllers in your household.
