How to Fix Smart Speaker Not Playing Music
Fix your smart speaker when it won't play music. Check network connection, restart device, update firmware, and troubleshoot common audio issues.
- Check your internet connection. Open a web browser on your phone or computer and visit any website to verify internet connectivity. If you have no internet, restart your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plugging it back in. Wait 2 minutes for full connection before testing your smart speaker again.
- Restart the smart speaker. Unplug your smart speaker from power for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the device to fully boot up—you'll see status lights return to normal or hear the startup sound. The restart process typically takes 30-60 seconds depending on your speaker model.
- Verify the music service is working. Open your music app directly on your phone and try playing the same song you requested from your speaker. If the app doesn't work, check the service's status page or try a different music platform. Common services include Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
- Check speaker volume and mute status. Say the wake word followed by 'set volume to 50 percent' or manually press the volume up button several times. Look for a mute indicator light on your device—this is usually red or orange. If muted, press the mute button or say 'unmute' to restore audio.
- Reconnect to your WiFi network. Open your smart speaker's companion app on your phone. Navigate to Device Settings > WiFi and select 'Change Network' or 'Forget Network.' Follow the setup process to reconnect your speaker to WiFi, entering your network password when prompted.
- Update the device firmware. Check your speaker's companion app for available updates in Settings > Device Updates or About. If an update is available, start the installation and keep your speaker plugged in throughout the process. Updates typically take 5-15 minutes to complete.
- Reset to factory settings. If previous steps failed, locate the reset button on your speaker—usually a small recessed button. Press and hold for 10-15 seconds while the device is powered on. The speaker will return to setup mode, and you'll need to reconfigure all settings through the companion app.
