How to Use Universal Control on Mac

Set up and use Universal Control to seamlessly control multiple Mac and iPad devices with one mouse and keyboard. Works with macOS Monterey 12.3+.

  1. Check system requirements. Ensure all devices run macOS Monterey 12.3 or later, or iPadOS 15.4 or later. Devices must be signed into the same Apple ID with two-factor authentication enabled. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi must be active on all devices.
  2. Enable Universal Control in System Settings. Open System Settings and click Displays. Click Advanced and check "Allow your pointer and keyboard to move between any nearby Mac or iPad." Check "Push through the edge of a display to connect to a nearby Mac or iPad" for automatic connection.
  3. Arrange display positions. In the same Displays settings, drag the display rectangles to match your physical device arrangement. Position them where you want the cursor to move between screens. The white bar indicates which display is primary.
  4. Connect to nearby devices. Move your cursor to the edge of your Mac's screen toward a nearby iPad or Mac. Push the cursor past the edge and hold for a moment. A connection prompt appears on the target device. Click Connect to establish the link.
  5. Move cursor between devices. Push your cursor past the edge of any connected display to move it to an adjacent device. The cursor appears on the target screen and your keyboard input follows. Click anywhere on a screen to make that device active for keyboard input.
  6. Drag files between devices. Select files on one device and drag them toward the edge of the screen where another device is positioned. Continue dragging onto the target device's screen. Release to copy the file to that device.
  7. Disconnect devices. In System Settings > Displays > Advanced, uncheck device names to disconnect them. Alternatively, turn off Bluetooth or Wi-Fi on any device to break the Universal Control connection.
