How to create a secure login password on macOS

Secure your Mac by updating your account password. Follow these steps to set a complex, unique password and enable strong security settings on macOS.

  1. Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu icon in the top-left corner of your display. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu to open the system configuration utility.
  2. Access User settings. Scroll down the sidebar on the left side of the window. Click Users & Groups to view your account details.
  3. Initiate password change. Locate your account in the list on the right. Click the 'Change' button located to the right of your account name and current password entry.
  4. Set the new password. Enter your old password once, then enter your new, complex password in the New Password field. Re-enter the new password in the Verify field to ensure accuracy.
  5. Apply changes. Click the Change Password button to commit the update. macOS will now require this new password for login, waking from sleep, and unlocking system preferences.
