How to Remap Modifier Keys on macOS
Learn how to customize and remap modifier keys like Caps Lock, Control, Option, and Command on your Mac through System Settings.
- Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings. Alternatively, press Command + Space, type System Settings, and press Return.
- Locate Keyboard settings. In the sidebar of the System Settings window, scroll down and click on Keyboard. This menu contains all configuration options for your connected input devices.
- Open Modifier Keys menu. Locate the Modifier Keys button positioned near the bottom of the Keyboard settings pane. Click this button to reveal the remapping interface.
- Remap your desired keys. Identify the keyboard you wish to modify using the 'Select keyboard' dropdown menu. Click the dropdown menu next to the specific modifier key you want to change and select the new function from the list.
- Save your changes. Review your selections carefully to ensure the new assignments meet your requirements. Click Done to apply the changes to your system immediately.
- Restore default settings. If you need to revert your keys to the factory configuration, return to the Modifier Keys menu. Click the Restore Defaults button to reset all keys to their original functions.
