How to lock your Mac instantly
Secure your Mac instantly with keyboard shortcuts, hot corners, and Touch ID. Speed up your workflow while maintaining system security.
- Use the lock keyboard shortcut. Press Control-Command-Q simultaneously to lock your Mac immediately. This returns you to the login screen while keeping your applications and processes running in the background.
- Configure Hot Corners for one-click locking. Navigate to System Settings, select Desktop & Dock, and click the Hot Corners button at the bottom of the list. Assign Lock Screen to one of the four corners in the dropdown menu and click Done.
- Enable Touch ID for quick unlocking. Go to System Settings, select Touch ID & Password, and ensure Use Touch ID for unlocking your Mac is toggled on. This allows you to re-access your system immediately after locking.
- Add the Lock Screen icon to your menu bar. Open Control Center within System Settings and locate the Lock Screen option. Select Show in Menu Bar to place a dedicated lock icon in your top menu bar for manual activation.
- Require a password immediately after locking. Navigate to System Settings, select Lock Screen, and set Require password after screen saver begins or display is turned off to Immediately. This ensures your Mac is fully secured the moment you lock it.
