How to Configure Account Recovery for your Mac

Secure your Apple ID and Mac data by setting up Account Recovery contacts. Follow these steps to ensure access to your account if you are locked out.

  1. Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen. Select System Settings from the dropdown list.
  2. Locate Apple ID settings. Click your Apple Name displayed at the top of the sidebar. Proceed by selecting Sign-In & Security from the main pane.
  3. Enable Account Recovery. Scroll down to find the Account Recovery section. Click the blue Add button next to Recovery Contact to begin the configuration.
  4. Select a recovery contact. Follow the prompts to add a trusted person from your contacts list. If you are part of a Family Sharing group, you may select a family member directly from the provided list.
  5. Send the invitation. Once selected, click Send to dispatch an invitation to your contact via iMessage. Your contact must accept the request on their own device to finalize the security bond.
