How to Transfer Files from PC to Mac
Transfer files from Windows PC to Mac using USB drive, cloud storage, network sharing, or Migration Assistant. Step-by-step instructions for all methods.
- Choose your transfer method. For files under 16GB, use a USB flash drive or cloud storage. For larger amounts or complete system migration, use an external hard drive or Migration Assistant. Network sharing works best when both computers are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Prepare files on your PC. Organize files you want to transfer into a single folder on your desktop. Note that some Windows-specific files like .exe applications won't work on Mac. Focus on documents, photos, videos, and music files.
- Format external drive for cross-platform use. If using USB or external drive, format it as exFAT in Windows Disk Management. Right-click the drive, select Format, choose exFAT as file system, and click Start. This ensures both Windows and Mac can read and write to the drive.
- Copy files to transfer medium. Drag your organized folder to the external drive, upload to cloud service like Google Drive or Dropbox, or enable file sharing in Windows Network Settings. For network sharing, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Sharing options and turn on network discovery.
- Connect transfer medium to Mac. Connect your USB drive to Mac, download files from cloud service, or access the PC through Finder's Network section. For direct network access, open Finder, click Network, and look for your PC name in the sidebar.
- Copy files to Mac destination. Drag files from external drive or downloaded cloud folder to your desired Mac location. Documents go to Documents folder, photos to Pictures, and music to Music folder. The Mac will automatically organize some file types in appropriate applications.
- Verify transfer completion. Open transferred files to confirm they work properly on Mac. Check that file sizes match between source and destination. Some files may need appropriate Mac applications to open — download these from the Mac App Store if needed.
