How to Update macOS Before Setting Up a New Mac

Ensure your new Mac operates on the latest firmware and software. Follow this guide to update your system during the initial setup process.

  1. Connect to a reliable network. Power on your Mac and follow the Setup Assistant prompts until you reach the Wi-Fi selection screen. Select a stable high-speed network to ensure the installer files download without interruption. Avoid using captive portal networks, such as hotels or airports, during this stage.
  2. Choose the migration path. Continue through the Migration Assistant prompts if you are transferring data from an old Mac. If you intend to perform a clean install, select 'Not Now' when prompted to transfer information. Completing the system update before migration minimizes potential file permission conflicts.
  3. Access System Settings. Once you reach the desktop, click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner of the screen. Select 'System Settings' from the dropdown menu to open the control panel. Navigate to the 'General' tab in the sidebar.
  4. Check for available software updates. Click on 'Software Update' within the General menu. The system will automatically poll Apple’s servers for the latest macOS release. If an update is available, click 'Update Now' to initiate the download.
  5. Authorize the installation. Enter your administrator password or use Touch ID when prompted to authenticate the installation. The Mac will restart automatically to apply the new firmware and OS files. Do not close the lid or power down the device during this process.
  6. Verify the installation version. After the Mac reboots and logs back into the user account, return to the Apple menu (). Select 'About This Mac' to confirm the macOS version number matches the latest release. Your system is now current and ready for data migration or app installation.
