How to Rename Your Mac Before Syncing

Learn how to rename your Mac to ensure proper identification on your local network and iCloud account before performing your first sync.

  1. Open System Settings. Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen. Select System Settings from the dropdown menu to open the configuration panel.
  2. Access General settings. Locate the sidebar on the left side of the System Settings window. Click on the General tab to display the primary system information options.
  3. Open About settings. Select About from the list of options on the right. This menu contains your computer's identification details, including the Name field.
  4. Edit the computer name. Click directly on the existing text in the Name field. Enter your desired computer name, ensuring it is unique to avoid conflicts with other devices on your local network.
  5. Confirm the local network name. Click the Edit button located next to the Local Hostname field. Ensure the network name matches your new system name and press OK to finalize.
