How to Install Apps from the Mac App Store

Learn the official process for downloading and installing applications on macOS using the Mac App Store. Safe, secure, and direct instructions.

  1. Open the App Store application. Press Command + Space to open Spotlight search, type App Store, and press Return. Alternatively, locate the App Store icon in your Dock or Launchpad to open it directly.
  2. Locate your desired application. Use the Search bar in the top-left corner of the window to enter the name of the software. Browse the results displayed in the main pane to ensure you have selected the correct developer and product.
  3. Review the application details. Click the app icon to open its product page. Review the screenshots, user ratings, and compatibility requirements listed under the Information section to confirm the app meets your needs.
  4. Initiate the installation. Click the Get button, or the price icon if the application is paid. If prompted, click Install and provide your Apple ID credentials or authenticate via Touch ID.
  5. Monitor the download progress. The Get button transforms into a circular progress indicator. Wait for the circle to complete and be replaced by the Open button, which signifies the installation is finished.
  6. Launch the new application. Click the Open button within the App Store to run the app immediately. The app will also be available in your Applications folder and via Launchpad.
