How to Enable Dark Mode on Kindle Paperwhite

Enable dark mode on your Kindle Paperwhite to reduce eye strain during nighttime reading. Step-by-step instructions.

  1. Wake your Kindle Paperwhite. Press any button on the device or tap the screen to wake it from sleep mode. The home screen or current book will appear.
  2. Open the Settings menu. From the home screen, tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Find Display Settings. In the Settings menu, look for Display and Fonts. Tap this option to access the display customization settings.
  4. Turn on Dark Mode. Locate the Dark Mode toggle switch. Tap the toggle to enable it. The display will immediately invert to show white text on a black background.
  5. Confirm dark mode is active. Return to the home screen or open a book to verify the display has switched to dark mode. The background should now be black with white text.
