How to Use Visual Look Up on iPhone

Learn to use Visual Look Up on iPhone to identify plants, animals, landmarks, and objects in your photos with Apple's AI-powered recognition feature.

  1. Open a photo with recognizable subjects. Launch the Photos app and select a photo containing plants, animals, landmarks, food, or other identifiable objects. Visual Look Up works best with clear, well-lit images where the subject takes up a significant portion of the frame.
  2. Look for the info button indicator. Tap the info button (i) at the bottom of the screen. If Visual Look Up detects recognizable subjects, you'll see small sparkles or stars around the info icon, indicating that identification data is available.
  3. Access the Look Up results. Scroll down in the info panel to find the Look Up section. You'll see thumbnail images of detected subjects along with category labels like "Plant," "Dog," or "Landmark." Tap any thumbnail to view detailed information.
  4. Explore detailed information. Tap "Look Up [Subject]" to open a knowledge panel with detailed information, including species names for plants and animals, historical facts for landmarks, or general information about objects. This opens in a Safari overlay within the Photos app.
  5. Use alternative access methods. Press and hold directly on a subject in any photo to bring up a context menu, then tap "Look Up" if available. You can also tap and hold on recognized subjects to see a white outline appear around them, then lift your finger to access Look Up.
  6. Copy or share identification results. From the Look Up panel, tap the share button to send information about the identified subject via Messages, Mail, or other apps. You can also copy scientific names or other details by pressing and holding on text within the information panel.
