How to Configure and Manage VPN Settings on iPhone

Secure your iPhone network traffic by manually configuring VPN settings. Learn how to add, manage, and verify your private connection protocols.

  1. Navigate to VPN configuration settings. Open the Settings app and navigate to General. Scroll down to find VPN & Device Management and select VPN to begin the manual entry process.
  2. Enter your specific VPN protocol details. Tap Add VPN Configuration. Select Type and choose your protocol—IKEv2, IPsec, or L2TP—as provided by your network administrator. Input the Description, Server address, Remote ID, and User Authentication credentials accurately.
  3. Enable and configure user authentication. Select User Authentication to toggle between Username and Certificate-based authentication. If using a certificate, ensure the file is installed on your device via the Configuration Profile section.
  4. Save and establish the connection. Tap Done in the top-right corner to save your settings. Locate your new configuration in the list and toggle the Status switch to Connect. Observe the Status indicator for the Connected label.
  5. Enable Connect on Demand. Tap the 'i' icon next to your saved VPN configuration. Toggle the Connect on Demand switch to On to ensure the iPhone automatically initiates the encrypted tunnel when it detects a network connection.
  6. Verify the active VPN status. Return to your Home Screen. Look for the VPN badge appearing in the top-right corner of the Control Center, indicating that your traffic is successfully routed through the configured tunnel.
