How to Use iPhone Shortcuts to Save Time
Learn to create and use iPhone Shortcuts app automations that save time on daily tasks. Master triggers, actions, and custom workflows on iOS.
- Open the Shortcuts app and explore the Gallery. Launch Shortcuts from your home screen. Tap Gallery at the bottom to browse pre-made shortcuts organized by category. These ready-to-use shortcuts cover common tasks like texting your ETA, starting a workout playlist, or ordering your usual coffee.
- Create your first custom shortcut. Tap the My Shortcuts tab, then tap the plus icon in the top-right corner. Tap Add Action to open the actions library. Search for a specific action like "Send Message" or browse by app. Each action represents one step in your automation sequence.
- Build a multi-step workflow. Add multiple actions by tapping the plus button between steps. Actions execute in order from top to bottom. Connect actions by using the output of one as the input for the next. For example, "Get Current Weather" feeds data to "Send Message" to text someone the forecast.
- Set up automation triggers. Tap the Automation tab at the bottom, then Create Personal Automation. Choose triggers like arriving at a location, connecting to CarPlay, or opening a specific app. Configure when and how the automation runs, then select which shortcut to execute.
- Add shortcuts to your home screen. Open any shortcut, tap the settings icon in the top-right, then select "Add to Home Screen." Choose a custom icon and name. The shortcut appears as an app icon, letting you run complex automations with a single tap without opening the Shortcuts app.
- Create voice commands with Siri. In shortcut settings, tap "Add to Siri" and record a custom phrase. Keep phrases short and distinct to avoid conflicts with other Siri commands. Once recorded, say your phrase to Siri anywhere on your device to run the shortcut hands-free.
- Share shortcuts with others. Tap the share button in any shortcut's settings to send it via Messages, Mail, or AirDrop. Recipients can add shared shortcuts to their library with one tap. Share useful shortcuts with family members or coworkers to spread automation across your network.
