How to Use iPhone NFC Tag Reader
Learn to read and write NFC tags with your iPhone using the built-in NFC reader, Shortcuts app, and third-party apps for automation and data sharing.
- Verify NFC compatibility on your iPhone. Check that your iPhone supports NFC tag reading. iPhone 7 and later models include NFC capability. Open Settings > General > About and confirm your model number. iPhones XR, XS, and newer can read tags in the background, while iPhone 7, 8, and X require the screen to be on.
- Enable NFC tag reading in settings. Open Settings and scroll down to tap Control Center. Tap Customize Controls and look for NFC Tag Reader in the More Controls section. Tap the green plus icon to add it to your Control Center. For iPhone XR and newer, NFC reading is automatically enabled.
- Position your iPhone near the NFC tag. Hold the top portion of your iPhone within 1-2 inches of the NFC tag. The NFC antenna is located near the top edge of your device. Keep your iPhone steady for 2-3 seconds until you see a notification banner appear at the top of your screen.
- Tap the NFC notification to read the tag. When your iPhone detects an NFC tag, a notification banner appears showing the tag's content or action. Tap this notification to open the associated link, app, or perform the programmed action. Common actions include opening websites, connecting to Wi-Fi networks, or launching specific apps.
- Create NFC automations using Shortcuts app. Open the Shortcuts app and tap the Automation tab at the bottom. Tap the plus icon and select Create Personal Automation. Choose NFC from the list and tap Scan to detect your NFC tag. Name your tag and tap Next, then add actions you want to trigger when the tag is scanned.
- Write data to NFC tags using third-party apps. Download apps like NFC TagInfo, TagWriter, or NFC Tools from the App Store to write data to blank NFC tags. Open your chosen app, select Write or Create, choose the data type (URL, text, Wi-Fi credentials), enter your information, and hold your iPhone near the blank tag to write the data.
- Test your programmed NFC tags. After writing data to an NFC tag, test it by holding your iPhone near the tag and verifying that the correct action triggers. Check that websites open properly, Wi-Fi credentials connect successfully, or that your automation runs as expected. Make adjustments using your NFC writing app if needed.
