How to Use iPhone Back Tap Feature

Learn to set up and use iPhone Back Tap to trigger actions with double or triple taps on the back of your device. Complete setup guide included.

  1. Open Back Tap settings. Open Settings and tap Accessibility. Scroll down to the Physical and Motor section and tap Touch. Find Back Tap at the bottom of the Touch settings menu.
  2. Configure Double Tap action. Tap Double Tap to see available actions. Choose from system actions like Screenshot, Control Center, or Spotlight, or select an accessibility feature like Magnifier or Voice Control. Tap your preferred action to enable it.
  3. Set up Triple Tap action. Return to the Back Tap menu and tap Triple Tap. Select a different action from the same list of options. You can assign the same action to both gestures or choose different ones for each.
  4. Test the Back Tap gesture. Exit Settings and hold your iPhone normally. Use your index or middle finger to firmly double tap the Apple logo area on the back of your phone. The action should trigger immediately if configured correctly.
  5. Adjust sensitivity if needed. If Back Tap doesn't respond consistently, return to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap. Try using a firmer tap or ensure your finger makes solid contact with the back glass surface.
  6. Add Shortcuts integration. For advanced functionality, select Shortcut from the Back Tap action list. This opens the Shortcuts app where you can choose any custom automation or shortcut you've created for quick access.
