How to Restore an iPhone Without Data Loss

Restore your iPhone to factory settings and recover your data using iCloud or local backups. Follow these steps to ensure no files are lost during the process.

  1. Perform a manual iCloud backup. Open Settings, tap your name, and select iCloud. Tap iCloud Backup and select Back Up Now to ensure your most recent state is captured in the cloud.
  2. Establish a wired connection. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the appropriate charging cable. Open Finder on macOS or iTunes on Windows to verify your device is recognized by the system.
  3. Create a local encrypted backup. In the Finder or iTunes window, select your iPhone under the Locations sidebar. Select 'Encrypt local backup', set a password you will remember, and click Back Up Now to save all health and keychain data locally.
  4. Initiate the restoration process. Within the Finder or iTunes general tab, click Restore iPhone. Confirm the action when prompted; the device will download the latest iOS firmware and erase all content.
  5. Restore from your backup. Once the iPhone restarts to the 'Hello' screen, follow the on-screen configuration until you reach the Apps & Data screen. Choose 'Restore from Mac or PC' and select the most recent backup file from your computer.
