How to Transfer Authenticator Apps to a New iPhone

A step-by-step guide to securely migrating your two-factor authentication accounts to a new iPhone without losing access to your services.

  1. Update existing authenticator apps. Ensure your current authenticator app is updated to the latest version via the App Store. Open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and select Update All to prevent compatibility issues during the export process.
  2. Generate a transfer migration code. In your primary authenticator app, locate the settings menu or the gear icon. Select the Transfer Accounts option, tap Export Accounts, and authenticate using Face ID or your device passcode. Choose the accounts you wish to move and tap Continue to generate a QR code.
  3. Scan the migration code on the new device. Install your preferred authenticator app on the new iPhone. Open the app, select Add Account, and choose the option to Import from another device. Scan the QR code currently displayed on your old iPhone using the camera viewfinder on the new device.
  4. Verify sync completion. Confirm that all account entries have successfully populated in the app on the new iPhone. Compare the entry counts on both devices to ensure no accounts were omitted during the scan.
  5. Securely remove data from the old device. Once you have verified that the codes are functional on the new device, delete the authenticator app from the old iPhone. If you plan to trade in the old device, perform a full Erase All Content and Settings via Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
