How to Reduce iPhone Notification Volume

Stop jarring notification alerts. Learn how to manage sound settings and disable attention-aware features to make your iPhone notifications quieter.

  1. Disable Change with Buttons. Open Settings and navigate to Sounds & Haptics. Toggle the Change with Buttons switch to the Off position to decouple ringer and alert volume from your side volume buttons.
  2. Set the Ringer and Alerts slider. Within the Sounds & Haptics menu, locate the Ringer and Alerts slider. Drag the indicator to the left to set a lower, permanent base volume for all incoming notifications.
  3. Disable Attention Aware Features. Go to Settings, select Accessibility, and tap Face ID & Attention. Toggle off Attention Aware Features to stop the iPhone from automatically lowering alert volumes when it detects your face.
  4. Assign quieter alert tones. Navigate to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone. Choose a shorter, less abrasive sound from the Alert Tones list to reduce the perceived loudness of incoming messages.
  5. Enable Haptics only. For specific high-frequency apps, navigate to Settings > Notifications and select the app. Toggle off the Sounds switch to rely solely on vibration, removing the audio component entirely.
