How to Export Photos Before Erasing Your iPhone

Learn the most efficient methods to transfer your full-resolution photos from iPhone to Mac or PC before wiping your device clean.

  1. Disable Optimized Storage. Go to Settings > Photos. Ensure 'Download and Keep Originals' is selected to ensure full-resolution files are present on the device before transfer.
  2. Establish a Wired Connection. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a high-quality USB cable. If a prompt appears on your iPhone screen, tap 'Trust' and enter your device passcode to authorize the connection.
  3. Import Photos on macOS. Open the Photos app on your Mac. Select your device from the sidebar, click 'Import All New Photos' in the top right corner, or choose specific photos to import.
  4. Import Photos on Windows. Open the Windows Photos app. Click 'Import' and select 'From a connected device.' Follow the on-screen prompts to select the destination folder and initiate the transfer.
  5. Confirm Data Integrity. Open the destination folder on your computer. Scroll through several random images to ensure they open correctly and retain their original metadata.
  6. Initiate Factory Reset. Once confirmed, navigate to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone. Tap 'Erase All Content and Settings' to begin the permanent removal of data.
