How to Dictate Punctuation on iPhone

Master hands-free typing on iPhone by learning how to dictate punctuation marks, symbols, and line breaks using Siri Dictation.

  1. Activate the Dictation feature. Open any app that uses the keyboard, such as Notes or Messages. Tap the microphone icon located in the bottom-right corner of the keyboard to begin listening.
  2. Speak standard punctuation marks. Dictate your sentence normally and include the name of the punctuation mark where you want it placed. For example, say "period," "comma," "question mark," or "exclamation point" to insert them into your text.
  3. Control text layout with breaks. Use the command "new line" to move the cursor to the next line without finishing the paragraph. Use the command "new paragraph" to insert a blank line and start a new block of text.
  4. Dictate special characters and symbols. You can insert technical or currency symbols by speaking their names. Try commands like "at sign," "ampersand," "dollar sign," or "plus sign" to place these characters precisely where needed.
  5. Stop the dictation session. Tap the keyboard icon or the microphone icon again to stop recording. Review the generated text to ensure all punctuation marks were recognized correctly.
