How to Update iPhone Software
Learn how to update your iPhone to the latest iOS version using Settings or iTunes. Step-by-step instructions for wireless and computer updates.
- Check your current iOS version. Open Settings and tap General, then tap About. Look for the Software Version line to see your current iOS version. Write this down to confirm the update worked later.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and plug in your charger. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and connect to a stable network. iOS updates require Wi-Fi and can be large files. Plug your iPhone into power — updates will not install if battery is below 50% unless connected to power.
- Navigate to Software Update. Open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update. Your iPhone will check Apple's servers for available updates. This process takes 15-30 seconds.
- Download the update. If an update appears, tap Download and Install. Enter your passcode when prompted. The download begins immediately and shows progress. Keep your iPhone connected to Wi-Fi during this process.
- Install the update. When download completes, tap Install Now or schedule the installation for later by tapping Install Tonight. The installation process restarts your iPhone and takes 10-20 minutes. Do not interrupt this process.
- Complete the setup process. After restart, your iPhone displays the iOS setup screens. Follow the prompts to agree to terms and configure new features. Enter your passcode when requested to complete the update.
- Verify the update installed. Return to Settings > General > About and check the Software Version. The number should match the update you just installed. Your iPhone is now running the latest iOS version.
