How to Set Up CarPlay on iPhone
Set up Apple CarPlay on your iPhone to connect wirelessly or with USB cable. Complete setup guide for iOS 7.1 and later with step-by-step instructions.
- Verify CarPlay compatibility. Check that your iPhone runs iOS 7.1 or later and your car supports CarPlay. Look for the CarPlay logo on your car's infotainment system or check your owner's manual. Most vehicles from 2016 onward include CarPlay support.
- Enable Siri on your iPhone. Open Settings > Siri & Search. Toggle on 'Listen for Hey Siri' and 'Press Side Button for Siri'. Complete the Siri setup process by following the voice recognition prompts. CarPlay requires Siri to function properly.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner. Ensure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi icons are highlighted blue. If not, tap each icon to enable them. Both must be active for wireless CarPlay setup.
- Start your car and access CarPlay settings. Start your vehicle and navigate to the CarPlay or Phone settings menu on your car's display. The exact menu location varies by manufacturer - look for 'Phone', 'Connectivity', or 'CarPlay' in your infotainment settings.
- Connect your iPhone to the car. For wired CarPlay, connect your iPhone using a Lightning to USB cable to your car's USB port. For wireless CarPlay, select your car's name from the Bluetooth settings on your iPhone when it appears. Your car's display will show a pairing code.
- Complete the pairing process. Follow the on-screen prompts on both your iPhone and car display. Enter any pairing codes when requested. Your iPhone will ask permission to allow CarPlay - tap 'Allow'. The CarPlay home screen will appear on your car's display once connected.
- Customize CarPlay app layout. Open Settings > General > CarPlay on your iPhone. Select your car from the list, then drag apps to rearrange their order on the CarPlay home screen. Remove unwanted apps by tapping the minus icon next to them.
