How to Update iOS on a New iPhone

Keep your new iPhone secure and functional by updating to the latest iOS version immediately after initial setup.

  1. Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network. Open the Settings app and tap Wi-Fi. Toggle the switch to On and select a stable network, as iOS updates are typically too large to download over cellular data.
  2. Access the General settings menu. In the Settings app, scroll down and tap General. This section contains the primary administrative controls for your device.
  3. Check for available updates. Tap Software Update. Your iPhone will automatically poll Apple’s servers to check for the latest compatible iOS version.
  4. Initiate the download process. If an update is available, tap Download and Install. Enter your device passcode if prompted to authorize the action.
  5. Execute the installation. Once the download completes, tap Install Now. The iPhone will restart and display the Apple logo and a progress bar; do not interrupt this process.
