How to Transfer a Physical SIM Card to a New iPhone

Learn the precise steps to move your physical SIM card from an old iPhone to a new device safely and effectively.

  1. Power off both devices. Turn off your current iPhone and your new iPhone completely. On models with Face ID, press and hold the side button and one volume button until the power off slider appears, then drag it.
  2. Remove the SIM tray. Locate the SIM tray on the side of your old iPhone. Insert a SIM eject tool or a small paperclip into the pinhole next to the tray and press firmly until the tray pops out.
  3. Extract the SIM card. Pull the tray straight out of the device. Remove the physical SIM card carefully by lifting it from the tray, ensuring you do not touch the gold contact points.
  4. Insert SIM into the new iPhone. Open the SIM tray on your new iPhone using the eject tool. Place your SIM card into the tray, ensuring the notched corner aligns with the tray's shape.
  5. Seal the SIM tray. Slide the tray back into the new iPhone until it sits flush with the side of the casing. Press firmly until you feel a secure click.
  6. Activate cellular service. Power on the new iPhone. Wait for the device to detect the network; the carrier name should appear in the status bar within one minute of booting.
