How to Resolve an Apple ID Setup Freeze on iPhone

Fix an iPhone stuck on the Apple ID sign-in screen during initial setup. Learn how to force restart, bypass setup, or use a computer to restore your device.

  1. Perform a Force Restart. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears on the screen, then release.
  2. Switch Network Connections. If the device remains stuck, return to the Wi-Fi selection screen by tapping the Back arrow. Select a different network, such as a mobile hotspot from another device, to rule out local firewall interference.
  3. Skip Apple ID Sign-in. Select Forgot password or don't have an Apple ID on the sign-in screen. Tap Set up later in Settings. This completes the device setup without an active cloud account, allowing you to sign in via the Settings app later.
  4. Connect to a Computer. Connect your iPhone to a Mac running macOS Catalina or later using Finder, or a PC with the latest version of iTunes. If the computer recognizes the device, you may be able to finish the activation process through the desktop interface.
  5. Put Device in Recovery Mode. While the iPhone is connected to your computer, perform the force restart button sequence (Step 1) but continue holding the Side button until the recovery screen appears showing a cable and a computer icon. Select Update when prompted by Finder or iTunes to reinstall the iOS software without erasing your data.
