Verify iCloud Backup Before New iPhone Purchase

Ensure your data is backed up to iCloud before upgrading your iPhone. This guide shows you how to check your backup status.

  1. Open iPhone Settings. Locate and tap the 'Settings' application icon on your iPhone's Home Screen. This is typically represented by a grey gear icon.
  2. Tap Your Apple ID. At the top of the Settings screen, tap your name and Apple ID profile. This section displays your account information.
  3. Select iCloud. Within your Apple ID settings, find and tap the 'iCloud' option. This menu manages services that sync with iCloud.
  4. Check iCloud Backup Status. Scroll down to the 'Backup' section. You will see 'iCloud Backup' with a toggle switch. Below this, it will indicate the date and time of your last successful backup.
  5. Perform a New Backup (If Necessary). If the last backup is too old or missing, tap 'Back Up Now' below the status. Ensure your iPhone is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. This process can take time depending on the amount of data.
  6. Verify App Data Sync. Above the 'Backup' section, review the list of apps using iCloud. Ensure toggles are enabled for critical apps like Photos, Contacts, and Messages. This confirms their data is also being synced.
