How to Fix iPhone Stuck in Headphone Mode

Fix your iPhone when it's stuck in headphone mode and won't play audio through speakers. Quick solutions for all iPhone models.

1. Check for debris in the Lightning port. Turn off your iPhone and inspect the Lightning port with a flashlight. Look for lint, dust, or debris that might be triggering the headphone sensor. Use a clean, dry toothbrush or compressed air to gently remove any visible debris.
2. Toggle Bluetooth and disconnect audio devices. Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth off, then back on. If you see any connected audio devices like AirPods or speakers, tap the 'i' icon next to them and select Forget This Device. Check if audio returns to the iPhone speakers.
3. Insert and remove headphones multiple times. Plug wired headphones into your iPhone's Lightning port, then remove them slowly. Repeat this process 5-10 times, wiggling the connector slightly as you insert and remove it. This can reset the headphone detection mechanism.
4. Force restart your iPhone. For iPhone 8 and later: quickly press Volume Up, then Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. For iPhone 7/7 Plus: hold Volume Down and Side button together. For iPhone 6s and earlier: hold Home and Sleep/Wake buttons together.
5. Reset all audio settings. Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode when prompted. This resets audio preferences, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings without deleting your data.
6. Check Control Center audio output. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center. Long-press the audio controls and look for the AirPlay icon. Tap it and select iPhone as your audio output device instead of any connected headphones or speakers.
7. Update iOS to the latest version. Open Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, tap Download and Install. Audio bugs are often fixed in iOS updates, and this may resolve the headphone mode issue permanently.
