How to Fix iPhone Speaker Not Working
Step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix iPhone speaker issues. Covers software settings, hardware cleaning, and advanced solutions.
- Check the Ring/Silent switch. Locate the Ring/Silent switch on the left side of your iPhone above the volume buttons. If you see orange, the phone is in Silent mode. Flip the switch toward the screen until the orange disappears and you hear the ringer sound.
- Test volume levels and settings. Press the volume up button repeatedly until you reach maximum volume. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics and drag the Ringer and Alerts slider to the right. Test the speaker by playing music from the Music app or a video from Photos.
- Clean the speaker grilles. Power off your iPhone completely. Use a clean, dry toothbrush to gently brush debris from the speaker grilles at the bottom of the device. Brush away from the phone to avoid pushing debris deeper. Use compressed air in short bursts to blow out remaining particles.
- Disable Bluetooth audio routing. Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth completely. Test your speaker again. If it works, your iPhone was routing audio to a connected Bluetooth device. Turn Bluetooth back on and forget problematic devices by tapping the 'i' icon next to their names and selecting Forget This Device.
- Check for software conflicts. Close all apps by double-tapping the home button (or swiping up from the bottom on Face ID models) and swiping up on each app preview. Restart your iPhone by holding the power button and either volume button until the power slider appears, then slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds before turning it back on.
- Reset all audio settings. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. Enter your passcode when prompted. This preserves your data but resets all system preferences including Wi-Fi passwords, wallpapers, and audio configurations.
- Test in Safe Mode. Force restart your iPhone by quickly pressing volume up, then volume down, then holding the power button until you see the Apple logo. This loads iOS without third-party modifications. Test the speaker immediately after restart before opening any apps.
