How to Fix iPhone Face ID Not Working

Fix iPhone Face ID recognition issues with these proven troubleshooting steps. Reset, clean, and reconfigure Face ID to restore secure unlock functionality.

  1. Clean the TrueDepth camera system. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the notch area at the top of your iPhone screen. Remove any dirt, makeup, or screen protector residue from the front-facing camera and infrared sensors. Avoid using liquids or compressed air.
  2. Check Face ID settings and requirements. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. Verify that iPhone Unlock is enabled. Ensure you're holding the phone 10-20 inches from your face in portrait orientation with eyes open and looking directly at the screen.
  3. Force restart your iPhone. Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. This clears temporary software issues affecting Face ID processing.
  4. Reset Face ID completely. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode, enter your passcode, then tap Reset Face ID. After the reset completes, tap Set Up Face ID and follow the on-screen instructions to re-scan your face, moving your head slowly in a complete circle.
  5. Add an alternate appearance. Return to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and tap Set Up an Alternate Appearance. Scan your face again, this time with any accessories you frequently wear like glasses, hats, or masks. This improves recognition accuracy across different looks.
  6. Update iOS to the latest version. Open Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates. Apple regularly releases Face ID improvements and bug fixes through iOS updates. Restart your iPhone after the update completes.
  7. Contact Apple Support for hardware issues. If Face ID still fails after software troubleshooting, the TrueDepth camera system may have hardware damage. Use the Apple Support app or visit apple.com/support to schedule a diagnostic appointment at an Apple Store or authorized service provider.
