How to Master the iPad Dock for Faster Navigation

Maximize your workflow on iPad by mastering Dock gestures, app switching, and multitasking shortcuts for faster navigation.

  1. Access the Dock within any app. Swipe upward slowly from the bottom edge of the screen until the Dock appears, then release. If you swipe too far, you will trigger the App Switcher instead of the Dock.
  2. Customize your pinned applications. Drag an app icon from the Home Screen into the left side of the Dock to pin it permanently. To remove an app, tap and hold the icon, then select Remove from Dock from the context menu.
  3. Launch apps in Split View. Open an app, then reveal the Dock. Drag a second app icon from the Dock to the far left or right edge of your screen until it snaps into a split-screen view.
  4. Open an app as a Slide Over window. While in an app, reveal the Dock. Tap and hold an app icon, then drag it toward the center of your screen. Release the icon to have the app hover as a floating window.
  5. Disable recent app suggestions. Open Settings, navigate to Home Screen & Multitasking, and toggle off Show Suggested and Recent Apps in Dock. This keeps your Dock layout static and predictable.
