Mastering Slide Over Multitasking on iPad

Learn to manage Slide Over windows on iPadOS to keep your workflow fluid without losing your primary application or active multitasking state.

  1. Open a secondary app in Slide Over. While your primary app is open, tap the Multitasking button—the three dots at the top center of the screen. Select the Slide Over icon, which displays a window floating to the right of your main workspace.
  2. Hide the Slide Over window. To temporarily clear the secondary app, swipe inward from the left edge of the Slide Over window. The app will slide off-screen to the right, leaving your primary app in full view.
  3. Recall your hidden Slide Over app. Swipe inward from the right edge of your screen toward the center. The hidden Slide Over window will reappear exactly as you left it, restoring your previous multitasking session.
  4. Manage your Slide Over app stack. When multiple apps are assigned to Slide Over, swipe the horizontal bar at the bottom of the Slide Over window to cycle through them. You can view all active Slide Over apps by swiping up from the bottom of the Slide Over window to enter the App Switcher view.
  5. Convert Slide Over to Split View. If you require both apps simultaneously, tap and hold the three dots at the top of the Slide Over window. Drag the window toward the top of the screen until the main app shifts, then release to snap both apps into a Split View configuration.
