How to Use iPad Split View Multitasking

Master iPad Split View to run two apps simultaneously. Step-by-step guide for opening, adjusting, and closing split screen on iPad.

  1. Open your first app. Launch the app you want to use as your primary application. This app will occupy one half of your screen when Split View is activated.
  2. Access the Dock. Swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen to reveal the Dock. The Dock contains your recently used apps and pinned applications.
  3. Drag the second app to split the screen. Touch and hold the app icon you want to use as your second app from the Dock. Drag it to either the left or right edge of the screen until you see the screen divide with a vertical line.
  4. Adjust the split ratio. Drag the vertical divider bar left or right to change how much screen space each app occupies. You can set the split to 50/50, 70/30, or 30/70 ratios.
  5. Switch apps within Split View. To replace either app, swipe up from the bottom to show the Dock, then drag a new app onto the app you want to replace. The new app will take its place in the split.
  6. Close Split View. Drag the divider bar all the way to either edge of the screen to close Split View and return to single-app mode. The app you drag toward will become the full-screen application.
