How to Create a Complete Backup of Your iPad
Secure your iPad data before a reset or upgrade. Follow these steps to perform a full iCloud or local computer backup to ensure no data is lost.
- Initiate an iCloud backup. Open the Settings app on your iPad and tap your name at the top of the sidebar. Tap iCloud, then select iCloud Backup. Ensure the Back Up This iPad toggle is enabled and tap Back Up Now to trigger an immediate synchronization of your data to Apple servers.
- Confirm backup completion. Stay within the iCloud Backup menu until the progress bar completes. Verify the Last Successful Backup timestamp matches the current time to confirm the snapshot is up to date.
- Connect iPad to a computer. Connect your iPad to your Mac or Windows PC using a verified USB-C cable. Open Finder on macOS (or the Apple Devices app on Windows) and select your iPad from the sidebar location list. If prompted on the iPad, tap Trust and enter your device passcode.
- Perform a local encrypted backup. In the General tab, locate the Backups section. Select the checkbox labeled Encrypt local backup and set a secure, memorable password. Click Back Up Now to begin transferring your data, settings, and health information to your local machine.
- Sync media and purchases. In the menu bar, select File, hover over Devices, and click Transfer Purchases from iPad. This ensures that any media or apps not currently synced to your computer library are copied to your primary device storage for future restoration.
- Disconnect and verify. Eject the iPad by clicking the Eject icon next to the device name in the Finder sidebar or Apple Devices app. Once the device disappears from the list, safely disconnect the cable from your iPad.
