How to Remap Modifier Keys on iPad

Customize your iPad workflow by remapping physical keyboard modifier keys like Command, Option, and Control for a personalized typing experience.

  1. Connect the external keyboard. Ensure your keyboard is successfully paired via Bluetooth or physically connected via the Smart Connector or USB-C. The remap settings remain inactive until the system detects a compatible external keyboard.
  2. Open keyboard hardware settings. Launch the Settings app from your Home Screen. Navigate to General, then select Keyboard. Tap on Hardware Keyboard to access the customization menu.
  3. Access modifier key remapping. Within the Hardware Keyboard menu, tap Modifier Keys. This displays a list of the physical keys currently recognized by iPadOS.
  4. Remap individual keys. Select the key you wish to modify, such as Caps Lock, Control, Option, or Command. Choose a new behavior from the list of available functions to assign to that physical key.
  5. Validate your changes. Exit the Settings app and test the modified keys within a text-based application like Notes or Pages. The changes take effect immediately without requiring a system restart.
