How to lock Notes on iPad

Secure your private information by locking specific notes on your iPad using Face ID, Touch ID, or a custom device passcode.

  1. Set your Notes password. Open the Settings app on your iPad. Scroll down to the sidebar, tap Notes, then tap Password. Select whether to use your device passcode or a dedicated custom password for your notes.
  2. Toggle biometric access. Within the same Notes settings menu, ensure the Use Face ID or Use Touch ID toggle is switched to the On position. This allows you to unlock notes using your biometric data instead of typing the password every time.
  3. Lock an individual note. Open the Notes app and navigate to the note you want to secure. Tap the More (...) icon in the top right corner of the screen. Tap the Lock button from the dropdown menu.
  4. Confirm the lock state. Once you tap Lock, the note will remain visible until you close the app or lock your iPad. Tap the Lock icon at the top of the note to immediately hide the contents and apply the security measure.
  5. Remove a lock. To unlock a note permanently, tap the note to open it, authenticate with Face ID or your password, then tap the More (...) icon. Select Remove Lock from the menu to decrypt the note.
