How to Free Up Storage on iPad

Clear iPad storage space by removing unnecessary files, optimizing photos, and managing apps. Quick steps to reclaim gigabytes of storage.

  1. Check current storage usage. Open Settings > General > iPad Storage. Wait for the storage analysis to complete. Review which apps and content consume the most space. Note apps you rarely use that occupy significant storage.
  2. Enable Optimize iPad Storage for Photos. Go to Settings > Photos > Optimize iPad Storage. This keeps smaller versions locally while storing full-resolution photos in iCloud. Your photo library will use 90% less local storage while remaining fully accessible.
  3. Remove unused apps completely. Return to Settings > General > iPad Storage. Tap apps you don't use and select Delete App. This removes both the app and all associated data. For apps you might reinstall later, choose Offload App to keep documents and data.
  4. Clear browser cache and data. In Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data, then confirm. For Chrome users, open Chrome > Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear Browsing Data > Clear Browsing Data. Select all time ranges and data types.
  5. Delete large message attachments. Open Settings > General > iPad Storage > Messages. Tap Review Large Attachments to see photos, videos, and files shared in conversations. Delete unnecessary items by swiping left and tapping Delete.
  6. Remove downloaded content from streaming apps. Open Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, or other streaming apps. Navigate to Downloads or My Downloads sections. Delete finished shows and movies. In Apple TV app, go to Library > Downloaded and remove content.
  7. Clean up Files app and cloud storage. Open Files app and check Downloads folder, Desktop, and Documents. Delete old PDFs, images, and documents you no longer need. Empty Recently Deleted folder by tapping Select All > Delete All.
