How to Force Restart an iPad
Learn the exact button combinations to force restart any iPad model when the device is frozen, unresponsive, or experiencing software glitches.
- Identify your iPad model. Determine if your iPad has a physical Home button. iPads without a Home button use Face ID or Touch ID in the top button, requiring a specific sequence of button presses.
- Perform the sequence for iPads without a Home button. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button. Press and quickly release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the top power button until the Apple logo appears on the display.
- Perform the sequence for iPads with a Home button. Press and hold both the Home button and the top (or side) power button simultaneously. Keep holding both buttons until the screen goes black and the Apple logo reappears.
- Observe the reboot process. Release the buttons once the Apple logo displays. The iPad will perform a standard boot sequence and return to the lock screen or home screen once finished.
- Handle a failure to restart. If the iPad fails to turn on, connect it to a power source for 30 minutes. Once charged, attempt the force restart sequence again while the device is plugged in.
